THINKING OF THE BIG BANG

This morning

as I was driving to school,

a bird began to sing.

Because the “big bang” happened

immeasurable years ago,

now this bird

was bringing me music.

As I turned the car up Barnes Road,

trees in Tennessee

were probably swinging their limbs,

and a wilderness of stars

was speeding away from us,

all because of an explosion

in the faraway past.

Perhaps people

on the tops of mountains

were trying to stay warm

that very minute,

and birds in forests

were finding their way,

as I was,

just because something

in the darkness

burst forth

billions of years ago.
